Over the past few days, some users reported that they came across Windows 7 download directory for Windows Update. Temporary update files are saved in C: \ Windows \ SoftwareDistribution \ Download. This folder can be renamed and deleted to prompt Windows to create the folder again. Please note that any uninstalled updates that were previously downloaded must be downloaded again before they can be installed.

The size of the folder where Windows update files are stored becomes an issue for users. The largest consumer of disk space on Windows clients is all obsolete and redundant files that are installed in component memory and are stored in the WinSxS directory. If you are wondering whether it is safe to clear Windows Update cache files or clean Windows updates that are no longer needed on your computer, our first suggestion is to delete Windows Update files. for this reason, it should ONLY be used as a last resort. It is generally not recommended to manually change the contents of the C: \ Windows drive. Bottom line: Use this update at your own risk, after going through all other options to properly apply Windows updates. If your Windows Update is not working as expected or not working at all, or if you find that the size of this folder has indeed grown, you can delete the Software Distribution folder in Windows 10/8/7.
