Network troubleshooting tools are required for every network administrator. When launching into a network space, it is important to have a set of tools that you can use to troubleshoot in various network conditions.

The use of certain tools may be subjective and left to the discretion of the engineer. However, the choice of tools in this article was made based on their generality and general use. This article describes ten of the best tools that you can use to troubleshoot most network problems.

10. Ping

The most commonly used network tool is the ping utility. This utility is used to provide a basic test of communication between the requesting host and the target host. This is done using the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), which can send an echo packet to a target host and has a mechanism to listen for a response from that host. Simply put, if the requesting host receives a response from the target host, that host is reachable. This utility is often used towould provide a basic picture of where certain network problems might be. For example, if your office has lost your internet connection, you can use the ping utility to find out if there is a problem with your office or your ISP's network. Figure 1 below shows an example of a ping utility used to determine the availability status of a locally connected router.

9. Tracert / Traceroute

Once the ping utility is used to determine the underlying connection, the tracert / traceroute utility can usually provide more specific information about the path to the destination host, including the route, the packet traversed, and the response times of those intermediate hosts. Figure 2 shows an example of a Tracert utility that finds the path from the desktop host to www.google.com. The tracert utility and the traceroute utility perform the same function, but work on different operating systems, Tracert for Windows computers and traceroute for Linux / * nix computers.

Sometimes this information is already known if the addressing is statically configured. However, if a dynamic addressing method is used, the IP address of each host can change frequently. The utilities used to determine this IP configuration information include the ipconfig utility on Windows computers and the ifconfig utility on Linux / * nix computers. Figure 3 below shows a sample ifconfig utility with IP configuration information for the request host.

Some of the most common network problems are related to dynamic name system (DNS) address resolution. DNS is used by everyone who uses the Internet to translate well-known domain names (eg Google.com) to unknown IP addresses (eg 74.125.115.147). If this system does not work, most of the functions that users are used to will be lost as this information cannot be resolved. The nslookup utility can be used to find specific IP addresses associated with a domain name. If this utility cannot resolve this information, there is a DNS problem. In addition to a simple search, the nslookup utility can query specific DNS servers to determine the problem with the default DNS servers configured on the host. Figure 4 below shows an example of how the nslookup utility can be used to query the appropriate IP address information.

6. Netstat



Often, among other things, it is necessary to determine the current state of active network connections on a host. This is very important information for a number of reasons. For example, if you want to check the status of a monitoring port on a host, or if you want to check which remote hosts are connected to the local host through a specific port. You can also use the netstat utility to determine which services on the host are associated with specific active ports. Figure 5 below shows an example of the netstat utility that shows the ports that are currently active on a Linux machine.

5. Terma PuTTY / Tera

Telnet, SSH or serial client is required to connect to various types of devices. If required, the puTTY software and the Tera Term software can provide these functions. Choosing among themselves is strictly personal preference. Figures 6 and 7 below show, hthen puTTY and Tera Term are used to connect to the host via SSH.

4. Subnet And IP Computers

One of the most important tools of the junior network technician is the IP network computer. They can be used to ensure that the correct IP address is selected and therefore the correct IP address setting. Although this type of tool is used by experienced network engineers, most of the information obtained with the tool is easier to compute the more you are in the field and more experienced. 3. Speedtest.net/pingtest.net

The pingtest.net website is used to determine the quality of a connection by measuring the ping response time and the amount of jitter in a short period of time. This information can be used to determine the likelihood of a measured connection's ability to handle certain types of high-demand traffic, such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or gaming. Figures 9 and 10 below show an example of output from these two locations.

2. Pathping / Mtr

The pathping and mtr utilities have been developed to use the ping and tracert / traceroute commands. Both tools take advantage of functionalityand information that can be obtained using these tools, and provide a more detailed single view of the properties of the path from a particular host to a particular destination. Figures 11 and 12 below show examples of these two tools and their information.

The last tool discussed in this article is the routing utility. This utility is used to display the current state of the routing table on a host. Although the use of the routing utility is limited in general situations where a host has only one IP address with a single gateway, it is important in other situations where there are multiple IP addresses and multiple gateways. available.
