Help troubleshoot system errors 32 rundll32

August 12, 2020 by Jimmie Bourn

It looks like some readers have encountered the famous error message with system error 32 rundll32. This problem occurs for several reasons. Now let's discuss this.

This program is part of Windows and is used to run program code in DLL files as if they were contained in the program itself. Note. The rundll32.exe file is located in the C: \\ Windows \\ System32 folder. Otherwise, rundll32.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm! Check it out with the Security Task Manager.

This rundll32 error message can appear when you try to open certain items in the Control Panel or when you try to open it. I recently saw this error on a client machine and can fix it as follows.

Why Is The Error Message Displayed

The actual text of the error message varies slightly depending on the version of Windows, but they all point to the same error - the rundll32.exe file is missing (or corrupted). Windows is an essential system file. It should be in the Windows \ System32 folder.

In most cases, the reason for the disappearance is that the file was infected with malware (for example, a virus). Then your antivirus or malware cleaner tried to "clean" the infected file.

What happens if I delete rundll32 Exe?

Disabling rundll32 makes your system unstable or worse, prevents Windows from starting at all. Instead, you can determine exactly which processes are hijacked or disguised as rundll32 and disable or delete those processes. Rundll32.exe is commonly used by viruses and malware.

In this case, the antivirus program would quarantine or delete the file - good for removing a virus, but bad for leaving you without this important system file ...

The best solution is to replace the missing rundll32.exe with a newer version. Depending on your version of Windows and your experience, there are several ways to do this. Firstala the simplest is shown:

1. Use The System File Checker (SFC)

System File Checker (SFC) is a Windows utility that finds and repairs missing or corrupted Windows files. Read our article on restoring Windows using SFC.

system 32 rundll32 error

Note. This article describes how to perform a full SFC check using the / scannow option. If you have recently suffered a virus infection, this is the best option as it checks all important Windows files so that all other missing / corrupted files can be replaced, not just rundll32.exe

Windows 10, 8, 7, and Vista (non XP) users can perform SFC scans for individual files using the / scanfile option to save time. In this case, the command will be like this:

2. Copy File From Backup

These directories contain a backup of many system files that can be replaced with damaged or missing files. In all versions of Windows except XP, you may need to search all WinSxS subfolders (including hidden and system files) to find the backupa copy of rundll32.exe, if available.

If a backup file is available, copy it to the Windows \ System32 directory and restart your computer. The error message should no longer appear and the control panel items should now open.

3. Extract The File From The Windows Installation Disc

If you have a complete Windows installation disc, you can extract (copy) the original rundll32.exe file from the CD / DVD to the Windows \ system32 folder.

4. System Restore

I left this until the last time because going back to an earlier date could lead to reintroduction of malware if you just removed a malware infection if you haven't gone far enough back in time ...

However, if you are sure that your system was cleaned up on a specific date, you can perform a system restore before that date. This should restore the original copy of the missing rundll32.exe file.

However, all programs (and Windows updates) installed after the system restore date will also be removed. You must reinstall these programs.

Conclusion

However troubleshooting is often quite simple. The best (paid) antivirus can protect against such bugs in the future.
