The easiest solution for changes in Exchange 2010 SP2July 18, 2020 by Larry Thomas
Recently, some of our readers have reported changes to Exchange 2010 Service Pack 2 (SP2). Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 2 (SP2) provides the latest updates for Office 2010. This service pack contains two types of hotfixes: unpublished hotfixes that were previously included in this service pack. In addition to general product fixes, these fixes include stability, performance, and security improvements.
Exchange 2010 SP2 Released
Yesterday Microsoft released Service Pack 2 for Exchange Server 2010, which includes cumulative service packs with the latest service pack and some requested items.
The service pack includes developments developed for the version of Microsoft Exchange Online, which, according to Kevin Ellison, general manager of working with Exchange clients, has a faster release cycle than the on-premises product. The online version includes quarterly publishing cycles and semi-annual versions. Improvements in these versions are reflected in the Exchange Server 2010 service packs, he explained in a video created by Microsoft.
One of the features requested by the client in Service Pack 2 (SP2) is the new “address book policy” feature that IT professionals can use to segment email connections into subsets within the enterprise. Address book policies do not allow certain users to see other users. It can be used by schools that share the views of students and teachers, or an enterprisethose who need to segment the email flows of their affiliates, Allison said. The concept is called “global address list segmentation,” which Microsoft describes here.
Using address book policies in Service Pack 2 makes it easy for anyone who wants to use Exchange Server 2010 locally in multi-tenant configurations. Microsoft introduced a “hosting mode” for locally installed systems in Service Pack 1 (SP1), but this limited the available features, such as the use of Exchange Unified Messaging. SP2 seems to eliminate this limitation, but Microsoft warns that hosts must follow certain configuration guidelines for everything to work correctly.
Another new feature in Service Pack 2 (SP2) is support for Outlook Web App Mini, a version of Microsoft's webmail client that can run on devices that use low bandwidth traffic. Outlook Web App Mini provides a simple text-based interface that users can use to access their emails or view globalabout the address list.
SP2 contains the feature "Redirect between Silent Sites for Outlook Web App." This feature is intended to simplify the process if the CAS request (Client Access Server) made by the Outlook Web application is to be redirected to the "CAS infrastructure in another Active Directory location" as announced by Microsoft.
Microsoft has added a hybrid configuration wizard for organizations that want to use both their hosted and on-premises Exchange infrastructure. Mailboxes can be hosted on the Internet cloud or installed on a company’s infrastructure. The wizard is designed to simplify the publication of configurations between the cloud and the room, as well as help with moving mailboxes and online archiving.
Microsoft has also improved its replication service to avoid manually configuring web.config files on the Client Access server. Using the service pack, IT can also turn off automatic mailbox assignment to reduce performance loss. There are also new “multi-valued user attributes” that are IT-specific lists can associate with email recipients. The addition of new cmdlets in SP2 improved control over the removal of spores in mailboxes. For a list of all the features of Service Pack 2, see this article from the Microsoft TechNet Library.
Microsoft has warned that IT professionals “must upgrade their Active Directory schema” to use these new features in Service Pack 2 (SP2).
The new service pack works with 64-bit versions of Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2 in accordance with Microsoft system requirements. It can be downloaded here.
