How do you deal with disabling Windows Updates for automatic updates?August 03, 2020 by Steven Colson
Over the past few days, some of our users have reported that they were undergoing automatic processing of Windows updates for automatic processing.
Run regedit.exe on the computer on which you want to disable Windows Update. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer. From the Edit menu, select New, DWORD Value. Enter the name NoWindowsUpdate and press Enter.
Unlike your predecessors, you can't just turn off automatic updates for Windows from Windows 10. The classic Windows Update window where users can turn off automatic updates has been removed from Windows 10 and there is no way to turn off automatic updates in the Settings app.
However, users running Windows 10 Pro Edition can make the necessary changes to the default Windows Update settings to notify users of available updates (users can install them if they want). Enabling this option will activate Windows 10. Updates are not downloaded or installed automatically. You can also download updates automatically, but notify users before installing them.
Several users have asked us if it is possible to configure Windows Update settings through the registry. The good news is that you can change the default Windows Update settings by editing the registry. Additionally, all Windows Update options offered in the group genderitiches are also available in the registry.
There is also a way to completely disable automatic updates in Windows 10 using the registry (never check for updates).
Disable Automatic Updates Completely
Important: We recommend that you create a system restore point manually before modifying the registry in case of a problem!
Step 1. Type Regedit in the Start menu or taskbar and press Enter. Click the Yes button when the User Account Control dialog box appears.
Enter a name in WindowsUpdate (no space between Windows and Update). Note that even after creating a new key, you can right-click on it and then click Rename to rename it to Windows Update.Step 4. After the WindowsUpdate key is generated, right-click the WindowsUpdate key, click New, click Key, and set the name to AU.
Step 5. Press the AU button. Right-click an empty area, click New, select DWORD (32-bit) and name it NoAutoUpdate.
If you are from Disable automatic updates according to the instructions above, Windows will never check for updates. When you access the advanced Windows settings options in the Settings app, the Never check for updates option appears under Choose how updates are installed.
Additional Options For Configuring Automatic Updates
If you don't want to completely disable automatic updates, but want to control how updates are installed, you can do so by following the instructions below.
Step 2. Select the AU button on the right, create a new 32-bit DWORD, name it AUOptions and set a value to one of the following numbers:
So if you want Windows to always notify you when an update is available, you should set the value to 2. If you are configuring Windows 10 to notify you before downloading updates, the best way to turn off automatic updates is that updates won't downloaded without your knowledge.
And for those who are interested, even if Windows 10 Home is presentt Registry Editor, these registry changes don't seem to help turn off automatic updates.
